Sentencing of UK Rioters

December 13th, 2011

The UK riots are estimated to have cost the taxpayer over £100 million.

The sentencing of people convicted for involvement in the riots that swept the UK in August has been criticised as being unfair and some lawyers fear rioters have been made an example of with sentencing disproportionately harsh compared with similar offences not associated with the riots.

Many young people with no previous contact with the police have found themselves with custodial sentences in young offenders’ institutions after being swept up in the riots.
